Over the course of a telecom network, every outdoor cabinet you deploy will experience some kind of weather event that it wasn’t prepared for, whether it’s an extended monsoon season that is 3 weeks longer than you planned for, wind and road salt throwing up dust at a coastal site, or the road dust thrown up by passing trucks.

The one number mentioned on a datasheet that can make or break an enclosure being a field failure or a network planner, procurement engineer, or OEM partner’s dream is the IP rating. However, IP55, IP65, and IP67 are often interchanged in vendor discussions, resulting in the specification of the enclosure to be used higher than necessary (and more expensive) or lower than necessary (and returned after a single rain).

This blog explains the meaning behind each rating, what the tests IEC 60529 actually certifies, how the test works, and how to correlate a rating to an actual deployment scenario rather than a marketing claim.

What an IP Rating Actually Certifies

IP designates Ingress Protection, which is controlled by IEC 60529, the international standard that specifies how enclosures are tested with regard to solid objects and water. The rating is always represented as two digits, e.g., IP55, where each digit is independent of the other.

The first number from 0 to 6 represents the protection against solid objects (dust, tools, wires, and fingers). The second digit (0-8) is the protection level against liquid intrusion: dripping water, spraying water, jets, and full immersion. Again, an outdoor cabinet is a cabinet rated for a specific, repeatable laboratory test for each digit, which is what enables the rating to be used to compare two vendors’ enclosures on an equal basis, and not on a supplier’s word for it.

IP55 — Dust-Protected, Splash-Resistant

An IP55 enclosure is marked as such with a first digit of 5, indicating that the enclosure is dust protected, but not completely dust-tight: dust can enter, but does not prevent safe operation of the equipment. The number 5 certifies that it is capable of resisting jets of low-pressure water from any direction that are enough to protect it from wind-driven rain and from washdown spray that occurs regularly, but not a high-pressure jet or a deep dive.

For an outdoor cabinet adjacent to the house or in a sheltered outdoor space, like a cabinet under an eave, covered shelter, or in a low-dust and low-rain region, IP55 is a reasonable justification, but not a target, for an outdoor telecom cabinet with no cover.IP55 is a reasonable justification for an outdoor telecom cabinet without cover (e.g. a cabinet under an eave, in a covered shelter or in a low-dust low-rainfall area), but it is not a target.

IP65 — Dust-Tight, Jet-Resistant

The first digit (6) in IP65 indicates that the enclosure is dust-tight – 100% dust-tight under test, which includes a dust chamber with a vacuum assisted dust chamber. The second number remains 5; thus the water resistance is the same level as IP55, but the dust resistance is 100% compared to only 50%.

IP65 is an ideal combination for cabinets placed near unpaved roads, construction zones, agricultural areas, or any place where airborne dust is present more than occasionally, which covers a significant portion of telecom pole-mount and ground-mount locations in India.

IP67 — Dust-Tight, Temporarily Submersible

The second digit of IP67 is raised from 6 to 7, indicating that the enclosure is dust-tight and also protects against temporary exposure to water for up to 30 minutes up to a depth of 1 metre. This is the rating used for equipment that is required to withstand water flooding, ponding around the base of a cabinet during heavy monsoon water run-off, or a low-lying installation where water can pool up faster than it drains.

A complete ODC enclosure and the power module inside of it are often rated at different levels and for good reason — the failure modes and cost/benefit trade-offs of the two are different, so the ratings make sense.

Matching the Rating to the Deployment, Not the Datasheet

The most frequent error in qualification is not using a too-cautious rating on each line item; it’s simply using a rating on each line item that is higher than necessary to achieve the same level of protection in the field. Some of the most common applications for ODCs that require IP67 grade submersion protection are poles in dry, elevated locations, while ground-based DCDBs in flood-prone right-of-ways almost always need it.

The correct method begins with the actual site conditions: dust load, intensity of rain, flood risk, altitude, and ambient temperature swing, and then moves backwards to the rating, component by component, instead of stating one blanket number throughout the entire bill of materials.

A Quick Reference

As a general guide; IP55 is suitable for protected or low risk of dust exposure applications where the dust level is moderate and the rainfall level is moderate and occasional; IP65 is suitable for applications where the equipment is subject to sustained dust exposure but not to rainfall; IP67 is suitable for applications with a genuine risk of flooding and ponding where the equipment may be immersed in water for minutes at a time.

None of the three ratings provides any indication of impact resistance, UV stability, or corrosion resistance of the enclosure’s finish; they’re all different ratings (IK impact resistance, RAL/pp coating thickness, gasket material) that need to be evaluated equally carefully and that are often combined loosely under the outdoor rated specification without being itemized separately on a spec sheet.

Why This Matters for OEMs and Network Operators

When it comes to the cost of enclosure sourcing, precision in IP rating is directly correlated with OEM and telecom operators. An under-rated cabinet will fail prematurely, create truck rolls, warranty issues, and, in the most dire of circumstances, network downtime that can be counted on SLA penalties. An overrated cabinet adds to the unit cost for a bulk order of hundreds or thousands of units to provide protection to a site that may never require it.
